Help workers in Bangladeshi sweatshops
Price: £100

The garment sector is the main export industry of Bangladesh and employs nearly two million workers. The living wage in Bangladesh is around £40 a month. However, on average Bangladeshi workers producing clothes for UK retailers receive less than £18 a month for working up to 80 hours each week.

Expose corporations and make them accountable

Garment workers typically work up double the weekly hours of an average person in the UK, barely making enough to support their families. Long working hours and hot and poorly ventilated factories mean that workers’ health suffers. They are harassed and threatened if they try to organise trade unions to fight for a decent wage and better working conditions, making it difficult to improve their lives.

The National Garment Workers' Federation (NGWF) works with exploited garment sector workers throughout Bangladesh. Through campaigning and education programmes, NGWF aims to ensure that workers receive fair wages and are aware of their basic rights. NGWF’s work with government and employers is leading to improvements in the working conditions and environment of factories in Bangladesh.

£100 could help pay the legal fees for Bangladeshi garment workers who need to take action against their employers for unpaid wages.
