In the sweatshop factories of south and south-east Asia, many workers are young women from poor rural areas, with little knowledge of their rights and how to use them.

In order to attract foreign investment and keep costs down, employers and governments often ignore legislated labour rights. Therefore, War on Want partner TIE Asia are running "gender-awareness workshops" to teach women workers their rights and to encourage them to fight for a more equal society. The workshops create awareness of the problems, often simply accepted by the women workers as part of their lives. They also teach leadership skills to organise the workers, increasing their influence in the workplace. Just £5 is enough to put one woman worker through a gender awareness workshop
