- EU, USA condemned for Hong Kong violence The WTO has concluded its Ministerial with an agreement which sentences small farmers, workers and communities across the developing world to desperate poverty, campaigns group War on Want said in Hong Kong today (18 December). The ‘gains’ announced in the deal are no more than symbolic gestures, while the losses are all too real. The Korean farmers on the streets of Hong Kong are the human face of this assault on the world’s poor.
- EU, USA steer WTO talks towards disaster The draft Ministerial text issued by the WTO today (17 December) has landed like a bombshell on the trade negotiations in Hong Kong. Rich country proposals for liberalisation of developing country markets have been pushed through despite concerted opposition, while EU and US agricultural regimes have been left untouched. By excluding key proposals submitted by developing countries and prioritising the views of the richest, the WTO has destroyed all hope of securing a ‘development round’ in the current trade talks.
