G4S workers backed on living wage

The British anti-poverty charity War on Want today announced its support for G4S workers in Malawi who are striking tomorrow (Wednesday, 30 January) for a living wage from the UK security company G4S.

Last May a fact-finding mission by an international delegation, including War on Want, found G4S staff in Malawi were paid an of average £15 a month, a quarter of a living wage.

The employees are so poor that they must walk 90 minutes each way to and from work, live in homes without electricity or running water and cannot afford to meet their children’s school or medical fees.

War on Want trade unions officer Jackie Simpkins, a member of the delegation, said: "G4S workers have the right to a living wage and decent conditions. We call on the company to do the right thing and heed this call from its Malawian staff."
