The SOAS War on Want Society hosted a meeting with Caoimhe Butterly, a solidarity and anti-war activist who has lived with communities of resistance in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Mexico.
Caoimhe talked about her experiences and struggles during the recent war in Lebanon and reported on the current humanitarian situation in the south. She showed a series of pictures of the communities she lives and works with as well as pictures of the devestation caused by Israeli military aggression.
Caoimhe is perhaps better known for protesting at Tony Blair's press conference in Beirut where she unraveled a banner and accused Blair of complicity in war crimes, and for her courageous human rights work, both in Jenin refugee camp and in Baghdad from February 2002-August 2003. She has also spent the past six months living and working in south Lebanon in a border village called A'ita al Chaab. She is the only Western activist living there.
