Colombia Press Releases

Colombian Congressman Wilson Borja Visits UK

Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world to be a trade unionist. In the last decade 1,535 people have been killed as a result of their involvement in trade union activity - more than in the rest of world combined.

A leading activist in the struggle for reform in the country, Wilson Borja, has been a member of the Colombian congress since 2002. Previously a Trade Union leader, he has been a constant target for right-wing paramilitaries who accuse him of being a guerrilla.

On December 15th 2000, Wilson survived an attempted assassination. Two people died in the attack, and Wilson was hit in the head, leg and shoulder and had to undergo extensive surgery. In total, 57 shots were fired.

The UK government continues to provide military aid to Colombia, which the Colombian government says is used in the “war on drugs”. However, neither government has released full details of how this assistance is put to use.

Wilson Borja arrives in the UK on the 14th November for a tour of the UK to raise awareness of the issues facing Trade Unionists and human rights groups in Colombia.
